Roots. Branches. Shoots. You may think we’re talking about trees – and in a way, we are. We’re talking about family trees! The Scarborough Public Library Genealogy Group is offered the fourth Monday of each month from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Whether you are just starting to explore your heritage or well into the process, this monthly “drop in” gathering will introduce you to vetted resources for ancestral research.The group will be facilitated by Don Taylor, a retired Information Technology Security Specialist who became interested in Genealogy in the 1970s. Since 2005, Don has focused on genealogical research, specializing in Internet research and genetic genealogy. He is a member of the Maine Genealogical Society (MGS), New England Historic Genealogical Society, and is on the Board of Directors of the Scarborough Historical Society (SHS) where he helps others research their Scarborough roots. Last September the Friends of Scarborough Library received a generous bequest from Fred Emerson - an engineer, businessman, entrepreneur, and Library Friend. In honor of his generosity and belief in lifelong learning, the Friends Board has used a portion of the bequest to create The Emerson Lectures, a series that will explore innovative ideas in business, science, technology, and engineering.
The inaugural lecture will be held at the Library on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 6:30. Christopher Timm, Chief Curator at Maine Maritime Museum in Bath will present SHIPWRECKS & SALVAGE drawn from an exhibit at the Museum. Mr.Timm will explain how ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) work to explore shipwrecks off the coast of Maine. This lecture is free to attend and open to the public.

Leave inhibitions behind and create free-form drawings, journal entries, small cards, or tiny books by using simple items like a drawing pencil or roller ball pen and a notepad or journal. While there is no “instructor” per se (this is a drop-in activity), we’ll be joined by Michael David Brown, a retired illustrator and Scarborough resident. This event is part of the Library's Adult Programming series and is free to attend. Basic supplies will be available or bring your own!

The Library's evening book discussion group meets in the Conference Room on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm.
A significant change in the news media in recent decades has been the shift toward partisan coverage. Technological and political factors have been major contributors, from the impact of presidential tweets on financial markets to how the US is struggling with the realities of climate science. In his presentation, The Case for Unbiased News, Richard Valdmanis will discuss how this trend under-serves news consumers and can lead to poor decision making - from the halls of finance, to Congress, and to the voting booth. Valdmanis will make the case for news outlets and news consumers to make a better effort to produce and seek out coverage that is free from partisan bias.
Richard Valdmanis joined Reuters in 1999 as a news assistant on the energy desk in New York, becoming Editor in Charge of Americas Energy in 2005. He left New York in 2009 to become Deputy Bureau Chief for West and Central Africa, where he covered the war in Mali, the revolution in Tunisia, and was part of the team of reporters that earned a Pulitzer nomination for coverage of Gadaffi’s overthrow in Libya. Valdmanis returned to the States in 2013 as Boston Bureau Chief, expanding his responsibilities to become part of the greater U.S. energy team in 2015.
