Aging

Wait! Please hang in there with me a moment. Whether you are a young person or someone who has decades of life experience, we all age.  We are all affected by the benefits and burdens that an aging population brings to society. You may be aware that Maine has the distinction of being the state with the oldest population in the country. This brings challenges for issues such as workforce, housing, social connections, transportation, and accessibility. Scarborough is experiencing all of those and the Public Library is working with our community partners as we enable a life span that is rewarding, productive, and safe.

The Town has joined the network of “Age-Friendly Communities”, a national initiative of AARP. The Library is coordinating with Scarborough Community Services and the Age-Friendly Scarborough committee to provide activities, information, and resources for our older citizens. These opportunities are not strictly limited to a person of a “certain age” but will be helpful to all of us who have a need or an interest in a better life and more livable community.

Please note the first of many programs are listed in this newsletter. We welcome your thoughts for additional programs and encourage you to become involved in future Age-Friendly initiatives.  Please contact: Elsa Rowe, erowe@scarboroughlibrary.org or 396-6279.

Respectfully,

Nancy E. Crowell
Library Director
