Retirement: More to This Story

Image of library director

As I write this, we are closing out National Library Week which had a theme of "There's More to the Story." We have so much to celebrate in our Library: wide-ranging collections in many formats, caring and knowledgeable staff, services and programs that inform, entertain and enhance our community.

I have been particularly reflective this past week as I formally announce my plan to retire in September after more than 45 years in my position. As we seek a successor, I am promoting this great library and what makes it special: the staff, Library Board, volunteers, and a community that appreciates and supports the services that are offered. I've enjoyed experiences and opportunities through my career that I think must be extraordinary by any professional measure. It's a great job.

I'm not ending the story. I'm putting a bookmark between the pages. For my personal tale, I remain committed to intellectual freedom, public service, and community-helping-community, and only the setting will change. For the Scarborough Public Library, there will be a new chapter in the table of contents.

With gratitude,

Nancy E. Crowell
Library Director
