Nature’s presence (presents)
Thanks to some keen-eyed arborists we have identified the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB) in two trees in our parking area. The damage is obvious, and the trees will be removed to reduce the opportunity for the invasive beetle to spread. The identification of the EAB in Scarborough puts us on the Maine Forest Service map with neighboring communities. We encourage you to learn more about this beetle by visiting the Maine Forest Service website or by picking up a brochure at the library.
As disturbing as the borer’s presence is, we’ve had happier gifts from nature in the past few weeks. We’ve said hello to a snapping turtle – from a distance, watched a young deer skirt the parking lot, enjoyed our resident muskrats in the pond, questioned a pileated woodpecker who seems to favor a telephone pole rather than all the trees surrounding it, and discussed photo poses with a curious woodchuck. The blueberries and raspberries are ready for snacking and the apple trees are showing a bumper crop. We are living our summer reading theme, Think Outside!
May your gifts be plentiful,
Nancy E. Crowell
