Walking. This word has taken on a new relevance to us at the Library over the past few years. The pandemic was the source of some lessons learned. We found the outside was a safe and calming environment to refresh and meet with others. For some, this was a new experience, for others a familiar and comforting routine. The Public Library incorporated outdoor experiences in our services and programs. We recognized that our location on the walker-friendly school and municipal campus, with surrounding green space, presented new opportunities for education and socializing. From walking book discussions to nature walks, we are “on the move." And we celebrate those of you who use the library as your location of choice to start your own walk.
This fall you will see further recognition of our effort to bring our community together while on the move. We have been awarded a $7000 Community Challenge grant from AARP which will provide funding for benches and signage along walking routes on the campus. This national grant program is to support livable communities for people of all ages. The Library is a member of Age-Friendly Scarborough and we are pleased to be a steward of this project in partnership with Scarborough Community Services and other Age-Friendly supporters. The benches will be one more opportunity to rest, reflect, or chat with others just as if you are inside the Library.
See you soon,
Nancy E. Crowell
