Our new Youth Services Manager has arrived! Deanna McNamara joined the staff on the first day of summer, just in time to help a significant surge of summer readers get reading logs and find their first reads of the summer. Deanna joins us after fourteen years as the Children's Librarian at the McArthur Library in Biddeford. Her CV includes working at the Baxter Public Library in Gorham and being chosen as the Maine Librarian of the Year by the Maine Library Association in 2012, among many other interesting distinctions, experiences, and educational opportunities.

To get to know her, we asked Deanna to answer a few questions:
What was your favorite book as a child?
This question is akin to asking me to pick a favorite child, impossible to pick a favorite! I was a prolific reader and have many books that are near and dear to my heart. If pressed though I would say "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L Konigsburg. If you ask me again tomorrow, I might give you a different title.
What book is on your to-be-read pile?
"96 Miles" by Esplin; "Chickens, Gin, and a Maine Friendship: the correspondence of E.B. White and Edmund Ware Smith"
Why did you want to work in our library?
The Scarborough Public Library exemplifies what I believe to be at the heart of library service- it is so much more than books! EV charging capabilities, solar panels, a space for artists to create and families and friends to gather. SCA is a true center for inquiry, learning and entertainment. There is something for everyone here and it feels like a community hub. There is an excitement in the air as people rediscover the library after the pandemic and it is invigorating! I love the new challenge and the ability to start with a clean slate.
What would you like the families of Scarborough to know about you?
I love connecting with families and I am committed to understanding this community and delivering the services that families want and need. Please stop by and say hello!
